The stick, you just want to save the data, really heal? That comes into the aging system really cope with large hard drives? To clarify this, and the integrity of data carriers, c't has developed the small program H2testw. It describes the selected disk with test data, it then reads back and verifies it. No error to occur, is not expected to capacity-related problems. This is also suitable for detection of manipulated H2testw USB sticks with the wrong size specification, as 2008 came in large numbers on the market.Caution: Do not use this tool only if there is no important data stored on the drive and it is not the boot disk on the system. Opinions on H2testw

The program is worth gold. However, the program has a downside. In the age of 2 TB drives that are connected via USB, does it take to complete writing ever 20 hours. If you interrupt the program, however, can not by the latter of the test data point to continue, but must delete the data and start over. Here is a function would be desirable to allow a continuation of the record or the test.

This simple tool supposedly fills the available space for normal files on USB drives, and tests whether there is also read what was written. Unpartitioned space, hidden sectors, existing files, etc., are not merely modified deliberately, but can naturally break down when a drive is formatted with more sectors than actually exists. Sectors is not enough H2TESTW, could allow such a fake 4GB drive actually 7698432 sectors (2048 * 179 * 21), but have been rounded off to 7,695,135 = 479 * 255 * 63rd Dskprobe tool helps to knit myself, not used as FAT32 cluster size 8 for 7698424 sectors MBR + 1 + 7 = 7698432, and then said H2TESTW and CHKDSK / R and neat, "okay".

Super program, I immediately emailed the link to my Chinese friends, it can test the time your USB flash drive before sending scrap, of course, there are also programs in China, but mostly just to test whether it is a fake-stick is (ie a 32 MB-1 GB flash drive shows as 32 MB of disk space even though only). This program also tests the quality of the stick and that is the essence; maximum score for this program I would have bought even if it would be not free ...

H2testw 1.4 – Gold Standard In Detecting USB Counterfeit Drives

Posted by KittyFireFlash on September 2, 2008

New! This article contains a poll you can vote on.

H2testw 1.4 has proven itself to be the best of breed for detecting counterfeit Flash drives. It is extremely easy to use and proves detailed information. Created by Harald Bögeholz, the interface is in German but has the option to run in English. It is free and standalone. Nothing is installed into the operating system. Designed for Windows it can run under Linux if Wine is installed. It will not run under Macs. If your computer can not run the software – ask a colleague or friend who has a windows based computer to help you test.

Gold Standard rating for H2testw 1.4? Why do you give this software such a high rating?

We give H2testw 1.4 the highest rating and recommend it for testing counterfeit USB Flash Drives for the following reasons:

  1. Easy to Use
  2. While in German an English Execution is possible
  3. Stand alone executable file – no installation required to run it
  4. You do not need administrator privileges on a computer to run it
  5. Tested to work on 1.1 and 2.0 USB drives
  6. Tested to work on 1.1 and 2.0 USB Ports
  7. Tested to work to analyze drives advertised as 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and yes …64 GB capacity.
  8. Reports seen capacity – what the operating system sees size to be.
  9. Will write 1 GB files up to the reported size – requiring no work on your part except patience if it is a large drive and a slow computer
  10. Will read all the files it wrote and verify them
  11. Will produce a report. a) short if all is well b) detailed if there issues found.
  12. The program is offered free

The readme.txt file provides:

  • Explanation of the program and what it does for general computer users
  • Information on how to interpret the results
  • Technical information for those who have a deeper understanding of data storage and file writing and for the skeptics out there. Output results can easily be copy pasted into notepad to be saved as a text file.

Reading speed: 10.8 MByte/s
H2testw v1.4

This is 4GB USB flash drive not a 64GB USB flash drive. It is of poor quality. As 4GB drive it should be about 3.9 GB not 3.8 GB formatted. This indicates in low level formatting a lot of bad sectors had to be locked out. Usually flash chips like these are rejected for major brands and should be destroyed. Unfortunately instead of the furnace flames these chips are leaving the back door of factories to be resold. These chips are a favorite for counterfeiters to reprogramme. Low cost, big profit.

The results from H2testw have been verified on drives detected as fakes. How?

  1. Drives were dissembled
  2. Controller chips identified
  3. Flash chip identified

Searches on the actual flash drives using their identification number revealed their true capacity. These matched the output from the H2testw Program.

In a few cases, when drives were disassembled, epoxy glue removed holding the flash drive to the bottom casing, quality control stickers were found with a size circled. The size? Exactly what H2testw reported as the capacity it could write to. All drives autopsied for investigation and validation of this program were purchased on eBay.

We do not see any other program that can match these features. Therefore, H2testw has been adopted as the Gold – Standard to detect and test fakes.

eBayers use this program to PROVE they have received a fake from a seller. It is confirmed with more eBayers reporting the same results for the same drive model. We have been able to prove this repeatedly, to the point we have only one conclusion. If a drive modelfails capacity testing with H2testw then any for that listing on eBay is a fake. Having more eBayers test the same model only confirms what H2testw reported. The autopsies on counterfeit drives have also proven the value of this program. The report is a God send for eBayers who must file disputes. It gives them evidence to submit with their case.

USB 3.1

USB 3.0

Recently, I bought a new USB flash drive and wanted to know whether the specs matched up to what it can actually do. Usually these days most USB flash drives are advertised as USB 2.0, but the brands among the bunch come with differing price tags.

Some of it can be put on the shoulders of brand marketing, but mostly it is the difference in specifications and features that accounts for the toll on your wallet.  Some come bundled with security software offering iron-clad privacy and some have memory capacities to tout. But hidden among these is the value of data transfer rates (reading and writing) capable from these flash devices.

So how do we go about checking the speed of USB flash drives? Maybe the following light and free software can lend a hand?

Check Flash

The Check Flash website is in Cyrillic (there is an English option too) but it shouldn’t stop anyone from downloading this light and free USB flash drive speed testing and error checking software.

With Check Flash you can test, manage and format your USB flash drive.  You can also run a read-write cycle on your USB flash drive, which returns not only the speed but also any errors (read/write or physical) in your USB drive. The software does not rectify the problem but merely reports it

Check Flash v1.07 runs as an 812KB sized executable and does not require an installation.

HD Speed

usb drive speed test

HD_Speed is a pint sized software that can be used to gauge the speed of data transfer on your hard disks, CD/DVD ROMS and USB flash drives. This program is compatible with Windows 2000, XP and Vista only, though it supports both FAT and NTFS volumes.

The 80KB utility does not require installation and runs with a click. Select the drive and hit start. The read/write results show up as a graph and also as real values.

Crystal Disk Mark

usb drive speeds

Crystal Disk Mark is another disk benchmarking tool that can double up as a USB flash drive speed tester. The screen is simple and gives readouts according to the type of tests performed.

Crystal Disk Mark can carry out sequential read/write tests (i.e. read/write data in order) or random 4KB/512KB reads/writes or text copy. The speed test results are displayed as large numerical in MB/s.The 396KB software runs as a standalone executable straight from the box and is compatible with Windows Vista/2003/XP.

Flash Memory Toolkit -- FULL V. NOT FREE--

usb drive speed review

Flash Memory Toolkit is advertised as a collection of utilities for flash memory devices. The toolkit includes options to get detailed device information, erase files and recover files lost after a format, hardware failure or an accidental deletion. Backup and restore functions along with our benchmarking task of measuring the read/write performance of the flash drive is available.

Unfortunately, the free standard version gives us only the ability to judge the Read speeds. To calculate both read/write speeds one has to upgrade to the Pro version. Even with this handicap, the ability to measure read speeds along with the File Benchmark feature (which calculates the time it will take to read or write files of various sizes to the device and returns the results as comparative graphs) is a nice help too.The 766KB software (v1.20) is installable on Windows 2000, XP, XP 64-bit, 2003 Server and Vista.

HD Tune --FULL V. NOT FREE--

Similar to the aforementioned software, HD Tune also comes in the free and paid flavors. And again, the free version allows for only read speed testing of our USB Flash drives. It also gives a detailed disk information option along with an error scan.

For more advanced aspects one need to dole out for the pro version. If you disregard the missing features in the free version, it is a handy utility to have around because it gives us a lot of benchmarking information like the maximum, minimum and the average transfer rates (i.e. the read speed) along with access time, burst rate (defined as the highest speed at which data can be transferred from the drive to the OS).HD Tune v2.55 is available for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server and Windows Vista.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

USB 2.0 has a cutting edge data rate of 480Mbps, and it is rated 40 times faster than the now archaic, USB 1.1, which peaked at 12Mbps. Flash drives are catching up with most now hovering around the 30-40 MB/s mark.

So have you checked the speed of your USB flash drive lately? Which software have you used? Share with us in the comments
