The town of Roses is located north of the Bay of Roses, south of Cap de Creus, on a hill between two waterways, near a natural harbor. Strategically, it is better positioned than Emporion as it is better protected from the wind.

The origins of the city are unclear, according to documented sources the city was founded by the Rhodians before the first Olympic Games, that is, before 776 BC, therefore it would be the foundation of the eighth century BC. C., during the dominance of so-called seawater by the inhabitants of Rhode Island. (

Here is also the Rhodos, a small factory of emporitans ("polichnion"), but according to some Rhodes, it is its foundation. Here, as in Emporion, Artemis Efes is revered, for reasons that will be said when talking about Massalia. ".

Then, by the sea, from top to bottom are the Ligurian and Greek cities that founded the Phocians of Massalia. The first was Emporion, and the second was Rhodes; this was founded by the Rhodians, who formerly owned many ships. (Psalm, verses 201-206). (3)

Both Strabo and Pseudo Scimnus affirm the Rhodian origin and its connection with the Massaliotes, and therefore with Emporion. The city of Strabo Siegun was later settled by Massaliotas, and for Scymnus Rhode was originally a colony of Massalia. (4) Despite literary sources, we cannot find foundations of cities from the eighth century BC, since no archaeological remains have been found to confirm this date.

On the other hand, the historian Lenormantus claims that it was founded by the Rhodians who were expelled from Sicily in 578 BC, therefore, if it is consistent with the archaeological remains, the foundation would be from the sixth century BC. (5)

As you can see, there is no homogeneity in the origins of the city of Rhodes, but what we are sure of and know consistently is the commercial character of the old city. This character can be seen on the trade routes and connections with Massalia.

The location of this ancient Greek city is relatively new, in the sixties it was known under the Castle of Roses. (6)

The fact of finding the site is very important for all Catalan historians who have tried to discover the site over the years. This importance is reflected in the words of Maluquer de Motes, professor of archaeology at Barcelona, who wrote in Herrona's Magazine: "The Greek factory of Rhodes, located within the walls of the Castle of Roses, was undoubtedly carried out in Catalonia during the last twenty-five years The most important archaeological event... The excavations carried out... by decisively confirming the location of Rhode Island, they opened an unprecedented chapter in the history of our land. (7 )

One of the important finds is the so-called Greek Quarter, in the Castle of Roses. This is one of our preserved architectural remains. There are few immovable remains, as later medieval and modern cities were destroying the remains of Greek cities. (8)

La ubicació d'aquesta antiga ciutat grega és relativament nova, als anys seixanta es coneixia sota el Castell de les Roses. (6)

El fet de trobar el jaciment és molt important per a tots els historiadors catalans que al llarg dels anys han intentat descobrir el jaciment. Aquesta importància queda reflectida en les paraules de Maluquer de Motes, catedràtic d'arqueologia de Barcelona, ​​que va escriure a la Revista de Herrona: "La fàbrica grega de Rodes, situada dins les muralles del Castell de Roses, es va dur a terme sens dubte a Catalunya durant els darrers vint-i-cinc anys L'esdeveniment arqueològic més important... les excavacions realitzades... en confirmar de manera decisiva la ubicació de Rhode Island, van obrir un capítol sense precedents en la història de la nostra terra.(7 )

Una de les troballes importants és l'anomenat Barri Grec, al Castell de Roses. Aquesta és una de les nostres restes arquitectòniques conservades. Hi ha poques restes immobles, ja que les ciutats medievals i modernes posteriors van anar destruint les restes de les ciutats gregues. (8)
