R. F. Tylecote. In 1782 water-sealed piston bellows were being considered in Sweden. By this time piston bellows had become accepted in other parts of Europe. According to Percy (1864: 285) the trompe is said to have been invented in Italy in 1640. ... was well known long before this as we can see in the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci, and he illustrated the trompe itself in the Codice Atlantico in 1440.
