The Mentalist is an American crime procedural television series that ran from September 23, 2008, until February 18, 2015, on CBS. The series follows Simon Baker as Patrick Jane, an independent consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) based in Sacramento, California and later on for the FBI. He has a remarkable track record for solving serious crimes by using his amazing skills of observation. Jane also makes frequent use of his mentalist abilities and his semi-celebrity past as a psychic medium using paranormal abilities he now admits he feigned. He abandoned his pretense out of remorse when his attention-seeking behavior attracted the attention of a serial killer, Red John, who killed his wife and daughter. With the exception of "Pilot", the first episode, and up through "Red John", the eighth episode of season six, the titles of all episodes refer or allude to "red" (or some shade thereof) as a word, color, or concept. Titles of episodes after this episode refer to different colors (e.g. white, silver, violet, blue, grey, black).

During the course of the series, 151 episodes of The Mentalist aired over seven seasons.

Episodes

With the exception of the pilot episode and season 2, episode 21, each Mentalist episode title incorporated various colors. Up to and including the sixth season's "Red John", the titles always included direct or indirect allusions to the color red, including various shades of red or items normally associated with red (e.g. blood, roses, fire). These "red" references served as a reminder of Red John, the mysterious figure responsible for the murder of Patrick Jane's wife and daughter. After the Red John storyline was resolved in "Red John," episode titles would allude to colors outside of red.

The Mentalist is an American television series on CBS, which premiered on September 23, 2008.  In several Latin American countries it is currently broadcast through TNT Series and was also broadcast on Warner Channel, in Spain through La Sexta, TNT and Atreseries, in Uruguay on Channel 10. After the success of the first season, the network decided to renew for a second and a third season. On May 18, 2011, CBS announced that, with the success of the third season, it would be renewed to record a fourth. On March 14, 2012, it was announced that the series was extended for a fifth and sixth season.

On May 10, 2014, CBS renewed the series for a seventh and final season.¹​

Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) is a psychic who makes a living appearing on TV shows. His life changes when in a TV show he slanders a serial killer known as Red John (John the Red in the Spanish version) and this in revenge, cruelly murders his wife and daughter. • Patrick Jane (by Simon Baker):

He is the protagonist of the series, son of fairgrounds. Before entering as an advisor to the CBI (California Bureau of Investigation), he worked as a psychic defrauding naïve, thanks to his exceptional skills of observation and verbosity. After appearing on a television show and mocking the serial killer Red John, saying that he is a poor soul and that he is going to catch him with his "powers", he decides to take revenge and takes the life of his wife and daughter in a brutal way, showing the world that Jane is only a fraud and a charlatan. After spending time in a psychiatric hospital, as a result of the trauma caused by being responsible for what happened to her family, Jane goes to the BIC with the mere intention of obtaining information about the Red John case, but joins the team as a consultant after helping them successfully solve a difficult case for the agency by using their "psychic" skills. in addition to relying on his other skills of hypnosis, sleight of hand and illusionism to solve crimes, working in the unit in charge of the agent Teresa Lisbon.

Although he is a bit eccentric, sarcastic and tactless, he is also perceptive and many of his theories help solve cases that the BIC investigates (even though his methods are unorthodox and often on the edge of the law). Jane is a complex character: Although most of the time she is cheerful, sociable, joking and quite childish, she has great pain inside her for having been the cause of the death of her family. He still wears his wedding ring and everything about Red John transforms him, becoming impulsive, dark and vindictive. It often helps the innocent people of the chapters.

In virtually every episode he can be seen wearing a three-piece suit without a tie. In all the chapters he is seen drinking tea or lying on a sofa of the BIC. He drives a Citroën DS model 1971, metallic gray color, very well preserved. After murdering Red John, Jane goes into exile outside the country to evade FBI persecution for his murder and find peace, without losing contact with Lisbon. He is then convinced by FBI agent Dennis Abbott to put his skills at the service of the federal agency in exchange for his freedom. Once at the FBI, he returns to work with Lisbon, at his request. In the season six finale, she admits her feelings to Lisbon before she leaves for Washington with Marcus Pike. In the last chapter, he and Lisbon get married and expect a baby.

• Teresa Lisbon (by Robin Tunney):

She is a beautiful woman and a great leader, strong, brave, determined and willing to sacrifice for the mission, her team or innocent people involved. Although he is sentimental and vulnerable, he hides it. She is the head of the team where Jane is. At first he is bothered by Jane's strange behavior and always has to intercede for him when he gets into trouble. However, they work well together and although she does not admit it, Teresa sees Patrick as a valuable member of the team and in some cases supports his more unusual theories; she is very attached to the rules and always tries to maintain a rough attitude to demonstrate her authority, but she is actually a person concerned about her team and with a sense of humor (otherwise she would not stand Patrick). As she says in the episode "Red Tide" she had a difficult childhood: Her mother was killed by a drunk driver and her father gave himself to alcohol by not enduring her loss, so since she was a child she had to assume the role of "mother" of her three younger brothers. Later, it is revealed that she has a more distant relationship with her siblings due to her leaving Chicago to become an agent.

At the end of the third season, Lisbon, along with Jane and the team, put together a plan to try to catch John the Red and the BIC mole, as a result, she was shot by Van Pelt's fiancé and was suspended for the start of the fourth season. In the second episode of season 4, Jane, with the help of Cho, Van Pelt and Rigsby, tricks her new boss Ray Haffner, while they solve a case to return Lisbon's job. Despite Jane's departure in the season finale, she and the team continue to work, albeit resolving fewer cases. In season 5, everything returns to normal, but Lisbon sees Lorelei's recurrence as a threat, generating a rift between her and Jane. After Lorelei's murder, his relationship with Jane returns to normal, and he entrusts her with Red John's list of seven suspects. At the start of Season 6, she and the team work hard to catch Red John. After the FBI closes the BIC for the events with the boss, Gale Bertram, when he is discovered as Red John's henchman, in addition to the murder of the serial killer and Jane's escape, she moves to Washington, where she works as a police chief. • Kimball Cho (by Tim Kang):

He is a member of the BIC in charge of Lisbon. It is one of the best in terms of interrogations because of its impassive and pragmatic character. He is serious almost all the time (although he does not lack a sense of humor) and says things bluntly, is bothered by stupidity and has only been seen smiling in the series two or three times. He was in the military and in a teenage reformatory, since he belonged to a youth gang called avon Park Playboys. He is often seen reading a book. He is second in command when Lisbon is gone. He is often Jane's accomplice in her plans to catch the killer, compared to Rigsby who tends more to follow the rules. In the fourth season, she has an affair with her informant, named Summer. He becomes good friends with Rigsby, often being his confidant regarding the relationship with Van Pelt. After the disappearance of the BIC he enters as an FBI agent, working with his former colleagues Jane and Lisbon. In the seventh season, he becomes a mentor to young agent Michelle Vega and after Abbott's departure, he becomes the head of the team.

• Wayne Rigsby (by Owain Yeoman): Another member of the Lisbon team. Rigsby is the typical big guy, somewhat dumb, but big-hearted. He is always eating anything he finds and almost always loses his money to Jane when he bets on him. He is in love with Van Pelt, but because they work together, Rigsby can't tell him how he truly feels about her until the second season, in which they live a romance that ends after pressure from the top brass. He dates a lawyer he meets in a case and as a result of this relationship they have a son, although it ends after deceiving the child's mother by posing as dead, as part of a BIC investigation to capture a suspect, although deep down he is still in love with Van Pelt marrying her in the sixth season. He doesn't like motorcyclists because his father was one. He was in the fire brigade and has been in the police for more than five years. He runs an electronic security company with his wife after the BIC was dissolved.

• Grace Van Pelt (by Amanda Righetti): She was the new and last member to join the Lisbon team at the BIC. A novice but a computer genius, Lisbon usually keeps her in the office researching on the computer. She is deeply religious and believes in psychics since her cousin is one; that's why he sometimes argues with Patrick, who is skeptical and doesn't believe in it. His father was a football coach, so he knows sports. Grace can be a bit naïve at times, but as the series progresses, she gains the respect of her colleagues and is seen to be able to make an arrest without problems. She wants Rigsby but, being the rookie, she does not dare to make any relationship since it goes against the rules and they could transfer her as a unit. However, their romance blossoms in the second season, but in the third season she has a courtship where she gets engaged to an FBI agent, which causes Rigsby jealousy, although he claims to be happy for her. She marries Rigsby in Season Six and at the end of season they have a daughter. On one occasion she has a hallucination with her former fiancé, but as the episodes go by she begins to try to change her post-traumatic behavior. She runs a security company with her husband after the BIC disappeared.

• Red John or John the Red (police chief Thomas McAllister) (by Xander Berkeley): He is a serial killer famous for being methodical and intelligent. In his youth, he was part of Visualize Church (The Red Barn). He is Patrick's nemesis and the main antagonist of the series. Their modus operandi is almost always the same. Its main feature is a mark in the form of a smiling face, which it draws with the blood of its victims using a glove and spreading the blood with three fingers, always clockwise. The mark is always placed in the first visible place so that the mark is seen before the victims, sometimes the mark and the victims are situated so that they can be seen simultaneously, but the victim is never seen before. In psychology, this means that he is a person who likes to challenge and be challenged, who is not shy and who has a big ego. He likes to be recognized and let people know what his seal means, and he doesn't accept that anyone will look down on him. He competes to see who is smarter and, so far, John has demonstrated knowledge of technology, police procedures and manipulation of people, so there is a widespread rumor that John is obsessed with Jane by considering himself a mentalist. Jane follows John and John follows Jane. For example, in episode 7 of the fourth season, Jane provokes another serial killer to speak ill of John the Red on a TV show, knowing that he would be watching him. His plan succeeds and that same night he is called, and when he goes to the stage he sees the mark of John the Red and the corpse of the other murderer. He was friends with a criminal named Orval Tanner and his son, Dumar, who participated in the capture of Maya Plaskett (Red John's Footsteps). He doesn't just act in California, he travels and murders across the border in Tijuana, Mexico, meaning he either uses an alias or has never been apprehended and has no record. It also suggests the possibility that he is a powerful man who has no problem entering or leaving the country, which is demonstrated by being the founder and leader of a secret society of police, federal agents and corrupt California politicians called "Blake Society", whose secret key is "Tiger, Tiger", a poem by the British writer William Blake , from whom the name derives. The fight between Jane and John is inevitable. Red John had the opportunity to kill Jane, but he did not do so apparently because of his pride as a murderous genius and, although he wishes to kill Patrick, he respects him and enjoys the morbid relationship he has with him through the murders. He is killed by Jane in the sixth season.

• Kim Fischer (by Emily Swallow): FBI special agent under dennis Abbott, his first appearance occurs traveling incognito abroad to return Patrick Jane to the United States, achieving it successfully. He is part of the team led by Abbott during the sixth season, along with Cho, Jane, Lisbon and Wylie. He leaves the team between the sixth and seventh seasons to take care of his mother.

• Dennis Abbott (by Rockmond Dunbar): FBI Special Agent, he is in charge of Jane's new team, his first appearance occurs in The Great Red Dragon (chapter 7, season 6), being the one who executes the court order to dissolve the BIC. According to Jane's readings, he is an Iraq war veteran and knows boxing. Some time after Red John's murder, he finds Jane abroad and offers to work for the FBI and pardon the charges against her, as long as she does not leave her job and meet the conditions imposed. After negotiations, he leads the unit of Fischer, Cho, Wylie and newcomers Jane and Lisbon, as well as other agents, during the sixth and seventh seasons. In the end, he leaves the team under Cho and moves to Washington with his wife getting a new job.
• Jason Wylie (by Joe Adler): A young, quirky FBI analyst who quickly makes a name for himself within the Abbott team with his technological expertise. Wylie is an enthusiastic computer expert for the team who normally takes care of tasks on the surveillance side, and occasionally also helps Jane with small favors. He falls in love with Vega during the seventh season and suffers his loss to the point that he considers leaving the team. In the end after a chat with Cho, he decides to stay.
• Michelle Vega (by Josie Loren): A rookie FBI agent recently graduated from Quantico and new to Abbott's team, replacing Fischer. He strives to get Cho's approval and obeys his orders whenever he can. She becomes close to Wylie since they are the youngest on the team. She is killed in action in the season 7 episode "Nothing Gold Can Stay".

• Virgil Minelli (by Gregory Itzin): First Chief of the BIC, he is the one who hires Jane to work as an advisor after helping them solve a case where a judge and an active policeman were involved. He is a serious character but with a strong humanitarian sense, he has always had to put his face to save Patrick from the constant accusations made by the people he interrogates. However, he trusts him and his abilities to solve crimes very much, to the point of saying that he will always help him as long as he does not pass the line, because he would first defend himself, and then the brigade. He resigns at the end of the second season after the murder, at the hands of his secretary, of four of his best agents, to whom he had assigned the case of John the Red. He has a small appearance in the third season, where he helps Patrick get the list of suspects from his current boss to reach his enemy.

• Madeleine Hightower (by Aunjanue Ellis): Relieves Virgil Minelli of his post after he resigned from his position due to the murder of his staff within the offices of the BIC. He has a tough and serious character, not earning at first the trust of the group and constantly drawing attention to Lisbon for Patrick's actions. Later he realizes the relationship between Agent Rigsby and Van Pelt and forbids him not knowing that they would have been short-lived. With the passage of the chapters she gains the trust of the group to the extent that Lisbon comes to admire her for her professional career and her quality in the work, even tolerating Jane as Virgil did, recognizing her abilities to solve cases although questioning several of her methods as her predecessor did. She leaves the agency when she is framed for the murder of Todd Johnson, a serial killer of police officers killed within the BIC and with ties to John the Red, fleeing with Jane's help.

• J.J. LaRoche (by Pruitt Taylor Vince): Internal Affairs agent, assigned to the todd Johnson murder case, has a strong and manipulative character to the extent of trying to intimidate people in his interrogations. At first he suspects that Jane is the murderer, but he never proves it since his companions, especially Lisbon, defended him, which is the object of Jane's mockery for a change. He is one of those who helped uncover Todd's real killer, when he discovers five possible suspects. One of them turns out to be Madeleine Hightower, whom he interrogates in a harsh and serious way. Once she flees, LaRoche is convinced that she was the murderer. Ironically it is in his car that he escapes; later, he is assigned as director of the BIC thus relieving Madeleine. Jane is willing to give everything to get LaRoche's list with the suspects in the murder of Todd Johnson, convinced that the murderer will take him directly to John the Red, confronting him and telling him that if he makes the list known to him he will tell him where Hightower is and will not tell the terrible secret he keeps in his safe. LaRoche, fearful, agrees on the condition that no such secret be revealed. Later, Jane claims that she has no idea what secret it was, she just bragged, although it is later discovered that what LaRoche hides is a lunch box, where she keeps the tongue of a subject accused and convicted of raping and murdering his mother, leading her career to ruin if they were to discover it. He dies with a shotgun trap made by Richard Haibach while he was hunting the former BIC team, as revenge for what happened to his finger because of Jane and his false list of possible suspects of being John the Red where he appears.

• Sam Bosco (by Terry Kinney): Introduced in the second season to take the case of John the Red, as Virgil Minelli considered Jane out of control by the killer. At first he showed an air of rudeness reaching the mockery in front of Patrick. He never tried to help him and, once he discovers that Jane had put a microphone in his office, he imprisons him. Eventually, he comes to take some confidence, but dies of a few shots in the lungs a few chapters later at the hands of his secretary, under the orders of John the Red.

• Kristina Frye (for Leslie Hope): "Medium" able to communicate with the afterlife by establishing communication between deceased loved ones, which Jane is not impressed by. Throughout the series he always had differences with Jane about beliefs in mediums and psychics. It is somewhat cheerful and outgoing, and usually helps the BIC in some cases. He begins to have a certain relationship with Jane, never getting to materialize anything. At the end of the second season she is kidnapped by John the Red when she mentions him on television, just as Jane did. Chapters later she is found totally catatonic and unable to speak, she only does so when Jane contacts her making her believe that she communicates with her spirit, as she claims to be dead.
• Bret Stiles (by Malcolm McDowell): leader of the Visualize Self-Realization Center (simply called "Visualize") church. Stiles is a friendly and ambitious church leader who has managed to deflect numerous investigations and has hinted to Jane that he has inside knowledge about Red John. In season 3, Stiles provides information that helps Jane and the CBI find catatonic Kristina Frye. In the season five finale, it is revealed that he is one of Red John's last seven suspects. In the sixth season episode "Fire and Brimstone", Jane reunites Bret and the other surviving suspects at their Malibu home. Bret is killed in an explosion that allows Red John to escape. The day before the explosion, while hiding in the Ecuadorian embassy, he reveals to Jane that he is terminally ill and does not have much time left to live.

• Richard Hailbach (by William Mapother): He is a pedophile and amateur photographer who liked to take pictures of younger girls. For being on the fake list of suspects, Bob Kirkland kidnaps and tortures him by cutting off his thumb. Blinded by anger against Jane (whom he blames for his amputated thumb), he begins a deadly hunt against former BIC members alongside his unbalanced older sister Hazel, killing Osvaldo Ardiles, J.J. LaRoche and then kidnapping Grace Van Pelt. He is shot dead by Van Pelt's husband, Wayne Rigsby, when he goes to rescue his wife with Jane. Hazel also dies at the hands of Rigsby.

• Gale Bertram (by Michael Gaston): Director General of the BIC, a serious character and lacking the sense of humor as you would expect from someone in his position. He is one of the five main suspects in the murder of Todd Johnson, even thinking that it was him because of the trap that Jane tends to capture the culprit. Later, in a cafeteria, his guilt is denied. Years later, in 2013, it is discovered that he is a member of the Blake Society and therefore a henchman of Red John, being shot in the stomach by Oscar Cordero, another henchman of Red John and a member of the Blake Society. Due to this situation, the BIC is compromised in its security and is dissolved by court order, which is executed by FBI Special Agent Dennis Abbott, who came from Texas to have federal agents from California involved in the Blake Society.

• Osvaldo Ardiles (by David Norona): Prosecutor's Secretary and one of J.J. LaRoche's five suspects. He had a small part in the penultimate episode of the third season when he has an argument with Cho about a case he was carrying. In the fourth season he remains in quite a conflict with Jane and the team over the events that occurred between Jane and John the Red. He was killed by Richard Haibach, stabbed several times in the chest, in the midst of his campaign of revenge against former BIC members.

• Brett Partridge (by Jack Plotnick): BIC forensic technician, a twisted and macabre lover. Partridge admires the modus operandi of John the Red, and maintains a tense enmity with Jane. He is one of the few characters to have appeared in the first episode, although from now on his participations in the series are sporadic, almost always in the crime scene of John the Red. Secretly, he was a henchman of John the Red and killed by him after stabbing him to prevent him from discovering his two-point tattoo on the shoulder that identifies him, as well as the other members including John the Red, as a member of the Blake Society. His last words were Tiger, Tiger, from the poem by William Blake, from whom the secret society is named.

• Brenda Shettrick (by Rebeca Wisocky): BIC media manager when there are issues related to them. She was one of five suspects in the murder of Todd Johnson. In the fifth season, she goes against the internal affairs agent J.J. LaRoche, stealing his "lunch box" from the safe that is in his house, but fails to discover what was in it when she is arrested informing a Mexican trafficker of an alleged operation to catch him, confirming links with them.

• Craig O'Laughlin (by Eric Winter): FBI Special Agent, charismatic and good-looking character, has a good police record by having many honors and, apparently, a very good training. He appears in the third season and falls in love with Van Pelt, even proposing to him and is accepting to Rigsby's misfortune. In the last episode of the third season, he is shot in the chest by Hightower and Van Pelt, who shot him in self-defense after it was proven that he was a murderer who worked for John the Red and then shot his boss Lisbon. At first he was not in love with her but, said by him, he liked her very much and began to fall in love with her.
• Sarah Harrigan (by Jillian Bach): A public defender whom the team first met in the season 3 episode "Every Rose Has Its Thorn." During the case, Harrigan and Rigsby began a relationship that continues until season 4 and in "My Bloody Valentine", she announces that she is pregnant with Rigsby. In "Black Cherry," it is revealed that she has been hired as an assistant district attorney (ADA). Eventually, she and Rigsby separate.

• Luther Wainwright (by Michael Rady): Introduced in the fourth season. Wainwright is the new boss who arrives to lead the division in which Jane works. He likes to "motivate the passion" of his people, so he lets Jane follow his intuition to solve cases, giving him time to prove that his instincts are right, proceeding to the traditional method of solving crimes if Patrick does not get evidence. In the episode (4x04) Ring around the rosie, Wainwright gives Jane a psychological examination, where it is proven that he has the profile of a psychopath, so Wainwright laughs and promises to get used to his eccentricities. In the last chapter of the fourth season (4x24) The Crimson Hat, he is shot in the head by FBI agent Susan Darcy, when they try to stop a car in which John the Red was supposedly going, but which was actually Wainwright gagged by John the Red.
• Susan Darcy (by Catherine Dent): FBI agent assigned to the Panzer case in the season 4 episode "Flashing Red Light". He becomes suspicious of Jane's claim that Red John is dead and tries to convince Jane to tell him the truth. Although Red John is alive, Jane does not want Darcy to find out, as Red John would kill her for having such knowledge. As he seeks to deepen his familiarity with Jane and gain her trust, he reveals (claims) that he lost a sister to drowning, for which he claims to blame herself. At the end of the fourth season, he accidentally murders Wainwright (who was bound and gagged) after shooting at the car of Lorelei and an accomplice of Red John. It is later revealed that he suffered a collapse, ruining his career at the FBI.

• Bob Kirkland (by Kevin Corrigan) He is a mysterious National Security Agent, who seems to be as obsessed with John the Red as Patrick Jane is. His activities included trying to find Lorelei Martins and killing Jason Lennon, one of John the Red's followers, who could tell Patrick who he was. Under her orders, two Homeland Security agents entered Jane's loft at the BIC (where she also resides) to photograph and copy the information Jane had on a board about the John the Red case, subsequently destroying it. He reproduced an almost exact version of Jane's information on the board, later revealing itself as false information that Jane planted, suspecting that he was being watched. Based on this false list, he began a hunt for those who appeared in it, appearing criminals that the BIC had arrested on previous occasions, torturing and murdering them later. In the season five finale, it was revealed that Kirkland was one of the last seven suspects of being Jane's John the Red. Finally, it was revealed that Kirkland was pursuing John the Red to avenge his twin brother, this being one of his accomplices, and who ended up dead at the hands of the serial killer. Kirkland was killed by FBI agent and Blake Society member Reede Smith.

• Lorelei Martins (by Emmanuelle Chriqui). She is a follower of John the Red, posing as a cocktail waitress and is sent to meet and seduce Jane in "The Crimson Hat"; she is later captured alive by the BIC at the end of Season 4. Although Jane and the BIC team intend to interrogate Martins, the FBI does not allow them. It is shown at the beginning of the fifth season that she is in a women's prison, still loyal to Red John, but seemingly resigned to life in prison. She escapes with Jane's help. Jane has uncovered evidence suggesting that John the Red and his agents murdered her sister, so she helps her escape so she can uncover the truth and then tell her who Red John is, but she breaks her promise and is killed by him at the end of "There Will Be Blood."

• Ray Haffner (by Reed Diamond) is a former BIC principal agent and member of Visualize. When the Lisbon team was suspended, Gale Bertram assigned Haffner and his team to work on their cases, including Red John. But Jane turned Haffner's team against himself, forcing Bertram to throw Haffner out of the case and reinstate Lisbon. Haffner then left the BIC and formed a private security firm with support from Visualize. Upon leaving, he tried to recruit Lisbon for his signature, an offer that politely, but firmly, he refused to accept. In episode 13 of the fifth season it is discovered that Red John was a member of Visualize from a young age and that Ray Haffner was also a member. He was one of the last five suspects of being Red John. Ray is killed in an explosion that allows Red John to escape.

• Marcus Pike (by Pedro Pascal): Agent of the FBI's art theft department who develops an affair with Lisbon after completing their first case together (Season Six, episode Violets). Later, Pike offers Lisbon the opportunity to move with him to Washington, D.C., in light of his new job offer, a proposal Lisbon is slow to consider before finally accepting, as well as a subsequent marriage proposal. Pike is aware of Lisbon and Jane's relationship, but is open-minded, compassionate, and generally understanding. At the end of the sixth season, Lisbon decides not to move to Washington with him to stay with Jane and Pike ends up accepting. In the first episode of the seventh season, he meets Jane and asks her what her plan is for Lisbon, considering that he planned to offer her a house and a family if she wanted to. After an uncomfortable meeting with Lisbon, he returns to Washington.

Production and distribution

The show often sets episodes based on fictional venues with names like Salinger Mill and Rancho Rosa. Like most American television shows, The Mentalist was filmed primarily in the studio area in Los Angeles County, but occasionally filmed a few scenes in Sacramento. The structure used to represent BIC's Sacramento headquarters is the back of Pico House in downtown Los Angeles. On October 15, 2008, CBS ordered the first season of The Mentalist.²and the program has been renewed every year since 2010 both domestically and abroad.³​⁴​⁵​

TNT began syndicating The Mentalist in the fall of 2011.⁶In the interregnum period between the late-night finale of Late Show with David Letterman and Late Show with Stephen Colbert in the summer of 2015, The Mentalist was brought overnight on CBS in its entirety as part of the network's temporary nighttime lineup.

In November 2013, it was confirmed that Amanda Righetti (Van Pelt) and Owain Yeoman (Rigsby) would be leaving after the sixth season concluded.⁷​

In season 7, in the episode "Orange Blossom Ice Cream", scenes in Beirut were filmed in Los Angeles and will be complemented by freelance footage of Michael Timney's Beirut.⁸​

Critical reception

The first season of The Mentalist received mostly positive reviews, with reviews split on the procedural format but praising Simon Baker's performance. On Rotten Tomatoes, Season 1 had an overall rating of 59% from 17 critics, and 76% from audiences, with the consensus saying, "The setting and episodic storytelling is far from original, but The Mentalist stands apart from other procedures, mainly because of the talented Simon Baker."¹¹On Metacritic, the first season has a score of 65/100, indicating "generally favorable reviews."¹²Robert Bianco of USA Today felt that the pilot episode lacked originality, but praised Baker saying "The Mentalist The Mentalist may be a copy, but it is a well-made copy sparked by an actor who has entered as a television star."¹³Matthew Gilbert of The Boston Globe said "the CBS show has very little dramatic weight or distinction, but it's cunning and quick enough to commit you for an hour." Gilbert also praised the chemistry between Baker and Tunney, but criticized the crime cases, feeling predictable and sometimes uninteresting.¹⁴Mary McNamara of The Los Angeles Times praised Baker as "virtually irresistible" and said "... the psychological trick of the hand can not fill an hour every week. For that you need complicated, interesting and complicated crimes, interesting characters solve them. The Mentalist seems poised to deliver just that."¹⁵​

The pilot episode had an audience of 15.6 million viewers on its first broadcast, and 7.8 million on a rebroadcast three days later.¹⁶On December 2, 2008, the episode, "Flame Red", was the highest-rated television show of the week, marking the first time a show in its first season had achieved that distinction since Desperate Housewives four years ago.¹⁷​
